GRADUATE COLLECTION - FLAT NATURE

"Many see the difference between the two (the Kimono and Western tailoring) as being analogous to the difference between sculpture and painting. So that unlike Western garments which are constructed in such a way as to "emphasize the three dimensional aspects of the body when the completed garment is worn, the flattened shape of the traditional Japanese costume ignores anatomical differences between the sexes. The result is a broad flat, straight-edged expanse that is closer to a painter's canvas than a sculptor's armature"
